Life, Love, and the Pursuit of a decent blog.

Recently, was asked to build a website for a project I was working on. Man was it fun. In the back of my mind I had always wanted to website of my own. I had a few small ones back in college but never really got anything off the ground. I have since removed myself from the previously mentioned project and am now missing the work I did on it. So I decided since I already had the domain, and already knew of a free web host from that project, I would try my hand again at making something last.

So over the last few weeks I have tried different things, including hosting my email and site on my father-in-laws host at Host gator. but here is the problem with that: 1. It’s his account. so if I needed anything changed I had to bug him about doing it, and while I don’t think he minded, I still hated bugging him about making small changes.  I wouldn’t mind doing them myself but there is no way for me to log into his account with different name and pass of my own.  I don’t want to use his log-in info because I don’t want to even accidentally mess something of his up. I really don’t like creating more work for others.  Hostgator seems like a pretty good host but in the 3 weeks I had me emails MX records there it was down for a good period of time. not necessarily Hostgator’s fault but again I can’t fix the problem.  I appreciate his generosity, but I think in this case it’s not something I can use.

So in any case, I decided to go back to Obviously it’s a free host so I’m not going to get all the bells and whistles that I would get at say Hostgator or one of the others, (like fantastico installers, etc.)  So far everything I have needed to do I have been able to do with my browser and an FTP client (Filezilla mostly.)  I finally did the actual WordPress installation last week. and it went smoothly.  I am looking for different themes to use.  I like the darker themes, but I’m not so good at .css.  I want to find something that is editable but doesn’t need much work to make it “mine”.  I found a few plugins for automatically tweeting a link to a new post. I have tried TwitterTools and TweetMe neither of which I can get to validate with twitter. Why I am not sure, but I am sure that it is starting to get frustrating.  Today while flipping through the blogs of a few friends I noticed something pretty cool that I hadn’t thought about: separating posts of different topics onto their own pages.  It would have to be pretty automatic for me to keep it up. As you can see I’m not that good at keeping up with things that require large amounts of work.  I think it’s just getting it set up and it should take care of itself as long as I categorize and tag posts appropriately.

So what’s going on with you?

[pause while I listen]

Cool/Oh! I’m glad/sorry to hear you are doing well/poorly.

[read aloud] So whats going on with you? its been a while since you posted anything.

Well, I’m glad you asked.  Skyler is 4 and proud to tell everyone about it.  Nikki is working again so I have become more or less a stay-at-home-dad.  I still work 3 days a week but the others I spend with Sky and Nik.  I enjoy staying home with Skyler but it makes it hard to pick up overtime. I don’t want to have to send her to daycare.  She on the other hand would rather play at daycare than stay at home with me.  By the way if anyone needs drop-in childcare in South Austin I can recommend KidSpa.  They are awesome. Skyler loves it there.  They are located at Slaughter/MoPac on the north west corner.  The staff is great they take great care of the kids. You can tell they are there because they want to be.

Shameless plug over, Moving on.

Nikki and I moved back in July into a great house I only wish I owned it.  It has SO much potential.  Especially the yard.  Pics to follow. I now have my garage back.  Only there is one thing that is a bit in the way, the frickin’ POOL TABLE!!!!  yeah the house came with a pool table. The owner walked me through the house and said if I wanted what was in the garage I could keep it and yes that included the pool table.  It needs new felt and rails but shouldn’t be more than 300-350 for that work.  It’s only 220 for the new felt.  I was so excited about the table because I have always wanted one. Now that I have one (that I can’t use) I’m not so excited.  We have no place to put it in the house so it must stay in the garage. If the pool table is in the garage then I am reluctant to use my table saw and other tools because the dust gets everywhere.  So it’s bitter sweet. I can’t have a ManCave and a workshop in the same room unfortunately.   What is a man to do?

I’ll tell you what a man is to do. Screw both and find another project he is even more excited about.  a 1969 Triumph Spitfire MKIII.  This thing has a whopping 68hp and top speed of somewhere around 80mph. Hopefully 88mph.  Anyway there will be PLENTY more info about the yet to be named Spitfire.  We have narrowed colors down to a few, and of course have a few details that we want picked out. Once we get the car into the garage we will have plenty of pictures.

So I think that’s about it. I sure hope it is. That’s a hell of a lot. More to come another time.
